L’APPEL WINE
Bart Johnston is the winemaker behind L'Appel wines, whose cuvées have got us—and a lot of other wine fans—head over heels.
Sourcing fruit from high-quality vineyards in the Coal Valley and Huon Valley, as well as select growers in Central Victoria thanks to a growing interest in alternate varieties, Johnston employs a farming and winemaking ethos that centres around rhythm and influence, rather than interference.
COLD-TAKES
What’s a beverage that always brings you comfort?
When the cold creeps in and the budget allows, it’s Northern Rhône for me! Côte-Rôtie when I want silk and a bit of seduction.
Where are you heading when you want comfort but don’t feel like hosting?
The Shippy in Battery Point — timber bar, fire crackling, footy on. It’s a Hobart classic that’s been looking after winemakers (and the odd sailor) since way back.
What’s your go-to dish when you want to impress your guests?
RACLETTE. Flat out. My partner introduced it to me recently and our guest list is ever-growing. Tassie spuds layered with raclette cheese, finished with cornichons and chives — it’s the craving that hits after a long, frosty day in the vines.
What album are you putting on when you need to set the mood?
Lost in the Dream by The War on Drugs. Dreamy, brooding and layered - like any good wine!
